Inaccurate Results – False Positives, and why they occur

Inaccurate Results – False Positives are results that indicate that a subject was lying, when indeed they were not.

Inaccurate Results - False Positives

Irrespective the methodology of Lie Detecting (Polygraph or Voice Stress Analysis), the process and protocols remain the same.

Every well trained, qualified and ethical examiner will always follow a specific process to conduct either a Polygraph or Voice Stress Test.

Should this specific process not be followed, Inaccurate Results -False Positives, may result.

The specific process referred to is the following:

PRE-TEST PHASE

CONSENT:

The subject is advised that the examination process is voluntary and that their written consent is required to confirm that they are offering their full co-operation of their own free will.

SHOULD THIS STEP BE LEFT OUT, THE EXAMINER IS GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

PURPOSE:

The subject’s understanding of the purpose of the test is determined and therefore further ensures their co-operation.

FITNESS BEFORE EXAMINATION:

The subject is questioned about their physical and psychological state of health to ascertain if there are problems that could have a negative influence on responses to the examination.

SHOULD THIS STEP BE LEFT OUT, THE EXAMINER IS GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

METHODOLOGY:

The method of truth verification is described and explained in detail, so also the process that will be followed, in order for the subjects’ fears and uncertainties of what to expect, to be addressed.

SHOULD THIS STEP BE LEFT OUT, THE EXAMINER IS GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

PRE-TEST INTERVIEW:

Information regarding the subject’s personal data, medical history, and working experience is obtained.

Their understanding and value of honesty with people who trust them, is determined. This allows for the examiner to create a psychological set of Control Questions against which reaction to the Relevant Questions, are compared.

SHOULD THIS STEP BE LEFT OUT, THE EXAMINER IS GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

The questions to be asked during the test must be thoroughly explained and reviewed in this pre-test phase, and the subject must be given opportunity to respond. This is crucial to obtaining reliable results as possible misunderstanding or misinterpretations are eliminated.

SHOULD THIS STEP BE LEFT OUT, THE EXAMINER IS GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

IN-TEST PHASE
TEST PROCESS

The examiner must lead the test process following exactly the process he explained to the subject previously, as this still further engenders trust and co-operation, as well as maintaining the least levels of stress to the subject.

SHOULD THE EXAMINER NOT ADHERE, THEY ARE GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

CADENCE

The waiting period between questions differ for Polygraph and Voice Stress Analysis; the cadence between questions is precisely determined to allow for the subject’s homeostasis to return to neutral before the next question is posed to them.

SHOULD THE EXAMINER NOT ADHERE, THEY ARE GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

QUESTIONS

The Control- and Relevant Questions must be asked in exactly the same way as was previously explained in the Pre-Test phase. Should the examiner change even just one word, primarily misunderstanding and/or misinterpretation may occur, and secondary, the subject is put under undue stress.

SHOULD THE EXAMINER NOT ADHERE, THEY ARE GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

INACCURATE RESULTS – FALSE POSITIVES, AND WHY THEY OCCUR!

Inaccurate Results - False Positives

So, what is the cause of Inaccurate Results – False Positives?

THE EXAMINER BEING GUILTY OF A MAJOR BREACH OF PROTOCOL!

BREACH OF PROTOCOL

When an examiner is guilty of a major breach of protocol, meaning they did not follow the precise process they were trained to, Inaccurate Results – False Positives may be obtained.

Inaccurate Results – False Positives are the culmination of many unseen factors and occurrences, such as:

  • Should the subject’s understanding and value of honesty with people who trust them, not be determined, the psychological set of Control Questions against which reaction to the Relevant Questions are compared, will be weak. This weakness will result in low definition of reaction to Relevant Questions. Leading to Inaccurate Results – False Positives.
  • Should the questions to be asked during the test not be thoroughly explained and reviewed, and the subject not given opportunity to respond, a door is opened primarily to misunderstanding and/or misinterpretations. Secondary, the deceptive subject may choose to interpret as suits them, and their physiology will always respond accordingly. Leading to Inaccurate Results – False Positives.
  • Should the examiner not lead the test process exactly as was explained to the subject previously, undue stress and subsequent physiological reaction will occur. Leading to Inaccurate Results – False Positives.
  • Should the waiting period between questions not be adhered to, the possibility of ‘bleeding’ is created. ‘Bleeding’ is the measurement of a reaction to a previous, previous question. A delayed response if you will, because the subjects’ homeostasis (Fight or Flight) hasn’t been allowed to return to neutral. Leading to Inaccurate Results – False Positives.
  • Should the questions during the test phase not be asked in exactly the same way as was explained to the subject previously, again primarily misunderstanding and/or misinterpretation may occur, and secondary, the subject is put under undue stress and their physiology will respond accordingly. Leading to Inaccurate Results – False Positives.

In my opinion for specific case related examinations, an acceptable ratio of Lie Detecting Results is 80/20.

80% of specific tests done usually result in No Deception Indicated. The subject was being truthful when answering the Relevant Questions.

20% of specific tests done usually result in Deception Indicated. The subject was not being truthful when answering the Relevant Questions.

In my opinion also, for Periodic Screenings, this ratio changes to 90/10.

90% of Screenings done usually result in No Deception Indicated. The subject was being truthful when answering the Relevant Questions.

10% of Screenings done usually result in Deception Indicated. The subject was not being truthful when answering the Relevant Questions.

This ratio indicates that your Honesty Management Program is successful, ie. Employees accept the parameters for proper conduct and understand the consequences when they do not.

Further, in my opinion, no ratio applies to Pre-employment Tests.

CONSEQUENCES OF INACCURATE RESULTS -FALSE POSITIVES,AND OUR tool to determine if you have ground to demand a re-test

When an employee’s results from a Lie Detecting Test returns as Deception Indicated, usually the consequences are dire.

Immediately trust between employee and employer is broken down. Further, the employee will be put on or remain suspended from work, until an investigation is completed. I do not need to explain the implication of that.

The worst consequence of Inaccurate Results – False Positives, in my view, is that the Lie Detection Industry and examiners lose the trust of their clients and subjects.

Reliability and accuracy is more important than affordability – choose your examiner wisely, re-evaluate your trust in their service regularly.

If you suspect that Inaccurate Results – False Positives are being reported because the above ratios no longer apply for you, download our Questionnaire here, to be completed by your employees who have been subjected to a Lie Detecting test, if all the answers aren’t YES, you may have ground to demand a Re-Test. Inform your current examiner and then use another examiner.

Also, look out for my next blog post on Re-Tests.

Best price for your Lie Detecting Test

In tough economic times like these, we all need to be wizards at cost-cutting. Bringing down existing expenditure and getting the best price can be done by calling the Provider and insisting on a discount or any other cost-cutting measure you can think of.

It helps to speak up.

For future expenditure, getting the best price for your Lie Detecting Test, is no exception.

Contact us for the best price for your Lie Detecting needs!

Here are some ‘Secrets’ I’ve put together to help you negotiate your way to getting the Best Price for Lie Detecting without compromising on Reliability and Accuracy.

Secrets to getting the best price for your Lie Detecting Test

  • First Secret – Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Relying on advertised figures can be a costly mistake. If you do see a competitive price, mention it to the competition. But also remember that you get what you pay for.
  • Second Secret – Ask what discount is available especially related to your specific need. If you are needing many tests done, to gauge general deviant behavior, to get the best price request a quantity discount.
  • Third Secret – Go straight to the top. Ask to speak to the business owner/senior examiner, as they have more authority to negotiate.
  • Fourth Secret – Pursue package deals. For your big projects of Periodic Screenings or Pre-employments, try to get the extras thrown in, such as a Call-out-Fee, Report Fee, Day Fee etc.
  • Fifth Secret – Be flexible. Small changes can make a big difference in price and time. It’s smart to consider one methodology over another so choosing between Polygraph or Voice Stress, depending on your requirements is a good idea for saving time and money. Also, the technique used for the tests may be priced differently, ask to make sure you get the best price.
  • Sixth Secret – Be willing to switch service providers. In the Truth Verification Industry client/examiner loyalty is becoming a thing of the past. Just because you have been making use of X’s Services for 5 years, doesn’t mean that Y won’t provide you with better service.
  • Seventh Secret – Push yourself beyond your (city) limits. You may possibly get a better price per test while the Call-out-Fee may be more expensive per kilometre, but the saving on the test price (if you have large group to be tested) may just come in lower overall.
  • Eighth Secret – Get on the hot list. Join the mailing lists of your favorite Lie Detecting Company (if they have one like us). Not only will you receive informative blog posts like this, you’ll receive advance notice of discounted rates.
  • Ninths Secret – Search cyberspace for Lie Detecting discounts. Any Company worth their salt will use Google Ads to offer discount.
  • Tenth Secret – Buy in bulk. Group all your annual tests together if possible, or at least bi-annually. This way you can ask for bulk testing discount.
  • Eleventh Secret – Try some teamwork. When you have some tests that need to be done, invite your neighbouring businesses to join in and ask for bulk discount this way.
  • Twelfth Secret – Get estimates in writing. And, compare your quoted figures with final invoiced figures.
  • Thirteenth Secret – Hunt for hidden charges. Some Lie Detecting Companies may quote very low on the per-test price but do not mention other fees until it is too late and they appear on your invoice.
  • Fourteenth Secret – Offer same-day payment for further discount. Usually payment is requested immediately, yet clients only settle towards the end of the following month. You may be handsomely rewarded for offering immediate settlement once the project is complete. Make sure you keep to this settlement agreement, should you not you may be hit with a revised, increased invoice.
  • Fifteenth Secret – When you get a bill, don’t focus only on the bottom line. Scan every item for erroneous charges.
  • Sixteenth Secret – Save on the Call-out-Fee. Go to examiner or hire/borrow a venue close to the Lie Detecting Companies’ office. On bulk testing, ask that the COF be included in the test fee.
  • Seventeenth Secret – Ask if a Sliding Scale of fees is available – the more you do, the cheaper each test becomes.
  • Eighteenth Secret – Sign a Retainer Agreement with guaranteed test figures/prices that are applicable for an agreed period of time. As this is the preferred type of client, your Service Provider will do everything they can to give you the best price.

Get Over That Lie

Have you been deceived in one way or another and struggling to Get Over That Lie?

It is devastating when we have been deceived by a spouse, partner, family member, business partner or employee; we’ve put our trust into this person and feel betrayed and hurt. Even worse, we feel responsible.

Honesty-Humility

“Researchers have studied this tendency and labelled it Honesty-Humility,” says Notre Dame Professor Anita Kelly, Ph.D., in a Psychology Today blog post. “Individuals high on this trait are sincere, modest, fair-minded, and non-greedy. They do not exploit others, even when there would be no retaliation for doing so. Individuals at the low end of this trait, on the other hand, are dishonest, haughty, and arrogant. They lack empathy and exploit others.”

The more decent we are, the easier it is for manipulators to deceive. “There is recent evidence that honest people tend to see others, particularly close others, as more honest than they actually are,” Kelly writes. We give liars the benefit of the doubt by believing that others are like us. The opposite also true; Liars believe others to be as dishonest as they are, “and thus see even honest partners as deserving to be exploited.”

This combination is lethal, and in addition dishonest people spent a lot of time learning how to be trustworthy.

In conclusion, the chances of an honest person being taken for a ride, taken advantage of and lied to are very high. When this happens, how to move on?

How to Get Over That Lie?

  • Relax

When you’ve been taken advantage of by a talented liar or master manipulator, it just means you’re honest.

  • Forgive yourself for being fooled.

The responsibility for the harm done is not yours.

  • Don’t give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

A consistent liar may not become truthful just because their deception has been exposed, not even when they have confessed voluntarily.

Be a step ahead of the game, learn the facial expressions, phrases and behaviours that usually signal a lie.

(Not yet subscribed? Get our FREE eBook here – 16 Tips To Knowing If You Are Being Lied To)

  • Check things out.

Ask for corroboration of a statement such as references, bank account statements, the chance to do an on-site inspection, or other independent verification. Further, if someone invites you to check out their references, past history, or anything else, always take them up on it, and REALLY do it!

  • Trust is earned.

Trust should not be automatic, let your trust be earned by action as opposed to word only.

If you’ve been challenged by lies and deceit, don’t allow yourself to wallow in the negativity.  Breathe. Take stock. Learn from the experience and move on.

HR Warning!

Consider lie detecting to confront misconduct but be sure of all the facts before you commit to the process and heed this HR Warning!

HR Warning! Collect information

HR Warning! 1; Collect as much information about the incident as possible because this guides you to who to include in the investigation. Testing any employees unnecessarily may lead to a breakdown in trust and therefore communication in the workplace.

HR Warning! Follow the process

HR Warning! 2; Follow a process of inviting all identified employees to interviews aimed at establishing the facts. If any employee refuses to attend, charge them with the lesser offence of ‘failing or refusing to obey a lawful and reasonable instruction’. Or, possibly even with ‘failing or refusing to cooperate in a workplace investigation’.

HR warning

HR Warning! Beware

  • A lie detecting test is not a requirement, rather consent is given in writing.
  • No discrimination and threats may be made.
  • Only questions previously discussed and understood will be used.
  • In addition, they may request an interpreter or any person to attend the examination. This person may not interfere with the process.
  • It is note worthy that a negative result indicates deception rather than being guilty of the crime.
  • Results of Voice Stress Analysis or Polygraph is used as secondary evidence only.
  • Other primary evidence is required.
  • Especially relevant make sure your disciplinary procedures are correct and therefore complete.
  • In conclusion confirm with your examiner that they are willing and able to give expert evidence of the tests’ reliability and accuracy to conclude your case at the CCMA.

What has been your experience, do you have any other HR warning to share?

McBride challenges Mokotedi to a Lie Detector Test

What I experienced when Robert McBride challenged Prince Mokotedi to a lie detector test.

December 2016 offered the opportunity to be involved in the well-known McBride Lie Detector Challenge with Mokotedi.

Gauteng Hawks head Prince Mokotedi leveled allegations of treason, conspiracy to murder and espionage against a group who allegedly plotted to cause the downfall of the president. McBride among others, was named in an affidavit containing these allegations that was used to open a docket on Monday 2016-12-12.

He responded by challenging Mokotedi to a Lie Detector Test who accepted initially but subsequently refused.

McBride submitted himself for a Lie Detector Test.

The mandate from our client was to determine whether any of the allegations made against McBride as described in Mokotedi’s affidavit, were true. The copy of the affidavit received had no Commissioner of Oath signature, nor the signature of Mokotedi. It was confirmed to be the affidavit used by Mokotedi to inform those concerned of the docket that was opened, and was the only copy available.

This presented the necessity to first authenticate the affidavit.

At our request McBride signed a statement confirming the affidavit in our possession to be a true and unaltered copy of Mokotedi’s affidavit. The veracity of McBride’s statement was then determined by our examiner Dolph Visagie. This initial Polygraph examination indicated a result of No Deception:  The examinee was truthful when answering the Relevant Questions of;

  1. (NO) “Did you lie in this statement?”
  2. (NO) “Is this statement a lie?”

Only then we were able to turn our attention to our mandate.

A second Polygraph was conducted with McBride indicating No Deception:  The examinee was truthful when answering the Relevant Questions of;

  1. (NO) “Are any of the allegation in that affidavit true?”
  2. (NO) “Are you in anyway involved in any of the allegations in that affidavit?”
  3. (NO) “Do you know for sure who is involved in any of the allegations in that affidavit?”

So, what did I experience as a professional from this McBride Lie Detector Test?

  • No Polygraph can be public. We insisted on the examination taking place in private and at a neutral venue. We rented the testing facility at the Omega Training Academy; a big thank you to our hosts Wessel Kritzinger and Roy Rawlins.
  • An examinee is an examinee. McBride was subjected to the Polygraphs strictly following protocol, there was no preferential treatment.
  • The client is the only recipient of the results. Despite pressure from the media, results remain confidential and are reported to the client only. This blog post was published with permission.

And, on the lighter side I experienced that:

  • There is no such thing as time off in the Lie Detecting Industry
  • Reporters wear very casual clothes but have a stylish jacket on hand
  • Notorious/Famous Celebrities can fluster ordinary folks
  • Notorious/Famous Celebrities are just people too

Tell the Truth and Profit

Is it possible to Tell the Truth and Profit?

To Tell the Truth is an American television panel game show created by Bob Stewart and produced by Goodson-Todman Productions. It aired in various forms since 1956 both on networks and in syndication.  The show is one of two game shows in the United States to have aired at least one new episode in at least seven consecutive decades, as of June 14, 2016.

A total of 26 seasons of the various versions of To Tell the Truth have been produced including the 2016 version, and this subsequently surpasses the 25 of What’s My Line? and the 20 of I’ve Got a Secret.

A way to tell the Truth and Profit
To Tell the Truth Game Show set

A way To Tell the Truth and Profit? I say!!

The show features a panel of four celebrities whose object is the correct identification of a described contestant who has an unusual occupation or has undergone an unusual experience. This ‘central character’ is therefore accompanied by two impostors who pretend to be the central character; together, the three persons are said to belong to a ‘team of challengers’.

The celebrity panelists pose questions to the three contestants; the impostors are allowed to lie, but the central character is sworn “to tell the truth.”

After questioning, the panel attempts to identify which of the three challengers is telling the truth and is thus the central character.

I first came across this game show while watching a Leonardo Di Caprio movie – Catch Me if you Can

Tell the Truth and Profit
Tell the Truth Frank Abagnale Jr

This was a movie depicting the life story of Frank William Abagnale Jr.  I was impressed by this young man’s ability to be whoever he wanted to be, albeit fraudulently, without being caught.  Of course he was caught in the end, and, because he was so good at fraud, he was hired to catch others!

Has Telling the Truth brought you Profit?

Mistakes do happen!

Errors in the Lie Detecting game can happen anytime during the process of booking an appointment, conducting the actual test through to sending the result and invoice…. and they have….

Mistakes in the Truth Verification industry is not unheard of; greatly avoided, but they do happen!

Errors in the Lie Detecting game can happen anytime during the process of booking an appointment, conducting the actual test through to sending the result and invoice…. and they have….

Mistakes must be avoided

Oversights while detecting deception are never accepted nor forgiven – your reputation as an examiner as well as that of the company represented, hang in the balance. And what to do when they DO happen?

Here’s a story from Henriette, our Founder and Principle Examiner:

“A few years ago, while still doing all the administrative work myself I made the mistake of short-cutting the typing time of a report by copying a previously typed report and not typing a new report from the correct Template.  This proved to be a very embarrassing and costly mistake! All the information on the report was accurate except for one short paragraph right at the end of the report; where the examiner has an opportunity to give further observation or advice.  At this point my oversight was to leave a comment applicable to a previous report, copied here! And, of course as it should be, the client picked up on this immediately; they called and demanded an explanation – of course I was mortified!”

AND HOW TO DEAL WITH MISTAKES?

“Even though I made the effort to see the client and the examinee to apologize in person, that one error ended very badly – I lost the client and probably until today that client will not trust this company, or me again.  And, since there is no faster travelling news than bad news, it is impossible to determine the impact that one mistake has had over the years.”

“While mistakes in this industry are to be avoided at all cost – they can happen. The best way to deal with them, as in life in general, own up. Admit to the mistake, apologize, learn from it and move on!”

Ages ago heart rate determined guilt or innocence

Be still my beating heart!

Mankind came a bit closer to the psychology and physiology link regarding Detecting Lies, during those dark, middle ages….

Change in heart rate determine guilt or innocence

The Method of the Ordeal to determine guilt or innocence

During the Middle Ages a suspect’s pulse rate readings were collected for determining his or her guilt.

This method was employed for exposing unfaithful wives and their lovers.

The testing technique was very simple.

A trained individual placed a finger on a wrist of a woman suspected of infidelity. While mentioning names of the men, who could have had an intimate relationship with her, HE measured her heart rate.

The examinee’s pulse accelerated when she heard and, consequently, reacted to the name of her lover.

And, so the change in heart rate became the first measurable parameter!

At least today the Detection of Deception is more objective.

However, objectivity on the part of the examiner requires three factors

  • Scientific method
  • Scientific technique
  • Psychological insight

All three of which were lacking in most of the ancient and medieval attempts to determine the truth.

Indeed, in many parts of the world the methods of the ‘Ordeal’ and of Torture are still employed.

Nevertheless, we have come a long way.

Only at the end of the 18th century were conditions conducive to developing technical means of detecting deception.

These were subsequently named:

  • Lie detector
  • Variograph
  • Polygraph
  • Emotional stress monitor
  • Deceptograph (I like this one the MOST)
  • Voice Stress Analysis

Currently, polygraph and lie detector are the most widely used names in the world
